Tim Dare running for WINGS of Hope
Tim Dare running for WINGS of Hope
Story
My name is Tim and this year I'm running in the Great Ocean Road Marathon in support of the charity, Wings of Hope.
I live in Colac, a small town in rural Victoria, surrounded by the beautiful Otway National Park. I'm in my early 30's and I have ran a couple of marathons and fun runs in the past. Running has always come natural to me. It's my favourite past time and I find it leaves me feeling uplifted. I could spend hours out in the Otways getting lost in the experience. It has always been on my mind to run for a cause but never known which one. They all need support. So, after having over a year off running in events, I decided to get back into it by running the Great Ocean Road Marathon. I just needed a charity.
After some research, I came across Wings of Hope and their mission really spoke to me. I identified myself with them because they support families in bereavement after losing a loved one to suicide. Growing up, I was 8 when I lost my father to suicide, leaving my mother, two older brothers and two younger brothers to deal with having to grieve and rebuild our lives. At the time I had some tough emotions to deal with and had many questions unanswered.
What I found with Wings of Hope is that they are committed to helping families such as mine. They have a special focus on younger children, understanding that suicide is a tough topic to discuss with children. The DVD and book resource, "Red Chocolate Elephants", helps carers aid discussion with children that are in the same situation I was in when I was 8. Making it easier to grieve and understand what is going on and help them feel heard, safe and more at ease with any fears, concerns or questions they may have.
By raising money for Wings of Hope, it would mean a lot for me to see the DVD/book resource be distributed to more schools around Australia. As someone who has walked in the young children shoes I see it as my duty to ease the burden for other children so they can have a healthy perspective now and into adulthood.

Donations made through this platform are secure and will be remitted directly through to my charity of choice.
Thanks so much for your support!
Wings of Hope Incorporated
Founded in 2007, WINGS of Hope, the voice of people bereaved by suicide, is a registered harm prevention charity providing education, resources and support events for people bereaved by suicide.
WINGS of Hope aims to help those bereaved by suicide by reducing isolation and preventing harm. We are a postvention organisation, (being resources and supports provided following a suicide death) and we do this through providing a unique education resource for children and families bereaved by suicide. Additionally we organise support events to enable adults with a shared or similar experience to network in order to reduce isolation.
Our Committee is comprised of volunteers who are passionate about making support accessible to Australians bereaved by suicide.
