Story
Hey there!
I'm absolutely thrilled to share a significant challenge I've taken on – I'll be running my very first marathon on September 17th! But this journey is about more than just completing a race; it's an opportunity for me to support a cause close to my heart: the suicide prevention program, Mates in Construction.
As a Civil Engineer working in the Railway Industry, I've had the chance to witness the construction world from up close for the first time this year. This experience has been transformative, not only for my professional growth but also for my personal outlook on the industry.
Throughout these months, I've had the privilege of meeting some incredible individuals – from laborers and traffic controllers to engineers and administrative staff. Their kindness, resilience, and passion for their work inspired me every day. I've been fortunate to collaborate with some of the industry's best minds, individuals who consistently go above and beyond, often putting in more than 12-hour days, all for the sake of building tomorrow’s infrastructure.
Yet, amid all the dedication and hard work, I also witnessed the challenges and unforgiving aspects of the construction world. The long hours, high staff turnover, and prolonged periods away from home can take a toll on one's mental health. While the company I work provides tools and resources to support our mental health,, I know that many of my colleagues in the industry do not have the same resources.
The statistics on youth suicide rates within our industry are alarming – they exceed the Australian average for men by 2.38 times. This needs to change, and I believe that together, we can make a difference.
That's why I've decided to fundraise for Mates in Construction. By contributing to this fundraiser, you'll be making a direct impact on the lives of those struggling within the construction community.

MATES in Construction is a for the industry, by the industry, not for profit that exists to strengthen the construction, mining and energy industries by preventing suicide; because a life saved is one less family grieving, one less site devastated and one less community heartbroken.
MATES is an evidence-based program that reduces stigma and promotes mentally healthier workplaces through training and support. MATES Field Officers deliver training to sites and keep in contact if anyone is in need, while MATES Support is available 24/7 to workers and their families who may be doing it tough.
