Running For Rozzie

Story

Running for Rozzie

In November 2012 Roz was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, in July 2014 after a hard brave fight Roz passed away from this nasty cancer. Every day she didn’t let this cancer rule her life and lived it to the fullest even travelling to America to ride the beloved teacups at Disneyland.

In 2016 we are travelling back to America to participate in the 2016 Disneyworld Princess Half Marathon weekend. Jennie will be competing in the 5km and the 10km runs while Naomi has taken up the Glass Slipper challenge of a 10km run and a half Marathon aswell as the 5km run.  We will be riding the teacups in Rozzies memory aswell.

We have decided to raise money for the GI Cancer Institute.

GI stands for Gastro-Intestinal cancer and is the term for the group of cancers that affect the Digestive System. This includes cancers of the Oesophagus, Gallbladder, Liver, Pancreas, Stomach and Bowel (the bowel includes the small intestine, large intestine or colon and Rectum)

GI Cancer is the most common form of cancer. More than 24,000 Australians are diagnosed with it each year and 33 die from it each and every day.

GI Cancer does not discriminate between men and women.

The GI Cancer Institute aims to fundraise for, and raise awareness about GI  Cancer.

It’s important that we improve the survival rates for GI Cancer

Only 6% of people contracting Pancreatic Cancer live more than 5years.

The five year survival rate of people with cancer of the stomach is 27%, liver 16% and colorectal (bowel) 67%.

Our survival rates are lower than other more well-known cancers. In 2012 over 12,000 people died from GI Cancers – more than twice the combined for breast and prostate.

Pancreatic cancer is the 9th most common cancer in men and the 10th most common cancer in women.

You may wonder why we should  donate to a cancer we have no emotional attachment to don’t know anyone who has been affected by it , before November 2012 we didn’t either and it has changed our lives and we don’t want any other family to experience what we had to.
