Heidi's Running for RACS
Heidi's Running for RACS
Story
This year I have committed to run in several Australian running festivals to raise awareness and help raise funds for the Refugee Advice & Casework Service (RACS). RACS provides legal advice and representation for refugees and asylum seekers so that their claims may be heard and tested.
Many of you will be aware of my interest in and support for RACS. In my role as the Pro Bono Coordinator at a Sydney law firm, I have provided assistance to people in immigration detention in Australia who have received a negative Independent Merits Review and are entitled to judicial review of that decision. It was through this work that I first heard about RACS and the fantastic work they perform providing free legal assistance to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
Since March 2012 there have been numerous changes in asylum seeker policy and significant cuts to the funding of legal assistance for asylum seekers. The result is an increased demand for access to legal advice and services, but a lack of funding for community legal centres to provide that advice, leaving men, women and children at risk of being sent back to danger. Unless RACS is able to raise $2 million over the next two years, this important and longstanding institution will cease to exist.
I want to do what I can to support RACS and help them to continue to provide their vital services to the community. I ran the Sydney Half Marathon on 18 May sporting my RACS running hat, and I have now signed up for a record (for me) number of runs including the Gold Coast Half Marathon, the Australian Outback Half Marathon, City2Surf and the Blackmore’s Half Marathon, with a view to raising at least $1,000 – and hopefully significantly more - for RACS. If you would like to make a donation to support RACS and help them to continue to provide their vital services to the community, you can do so here. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you will be issued with a DGR receipt via email as soon as you make a donation. Click 'Donate Now' to make a secure online donation.
I would also really appreciate it if you could share my page or comment below so more people know about it.
Thank you!
Heidi

RACS (Refugee Advice and Casework Service Australia)
The Refugee Advice & Casework Service is a strong, independent public voice for the rights of refugees and people seeking asylum.
We achieve justice and dignity for refugees through the provision of effective legal services and advocacy.
People who come to Australia seeking asylum are amongst the most vulnerable who come into contact with Australia’s legal and migration system.
For them, a negative decision on their refugee status could mean they are sent back to danger.
At RACS, we:
- provide critical free legal advice, case management and representation for financially disadvantaged and vulnerable people seeking asylum or family reunion
- represent children without their parents, who are seeking protection in Australia
- make complaints for people about serious violations of their human rights to the Australian and United Nations complaints bodies; and
- advocate for systemic law reform and fight for policy that treats refugees with justice, dignity and respect.
With no federal government funding, we rely on donations, grants and pro bono support to continue our vital work.
